We try extra hard during this Christmas season to remind the kids why we celebrate Christmas every year. With Santa and elves, and presents at every turn, it's easy to see why kids are consumed with all that stuff. So this year, we decided to make our first ever 'Happy Birthday Jesus cake', which I stole from my girlfriend Melissa ;)
I got a white cake mix and a chocolate cake mix, and had the kids prepare them separately:
.
Then we divided the white cake equally into 2 separate bowls. Jake added the green and Lauren the red (we also dumped 1/2 of the choloalte cake mix so all three layers were even).
Then we tasted it to make sure it was edible. It was ;)
After it cooled, I frosted it, added some festive sprinkles and a candle:
The meaning behind the cake:
Chocolate layer- Our sins
Red layer- Jesus' shed blood for our sins to cover them
Green layer- Growing in our new life with Him
White frosting- A reminder that only through Jesus that our sins are wiped clean.
Candle- A reminder that Jesus brought light into this world and we too need to be a light to others and share the Good News of Jesus Christ.
That night, we brought this cake to our small group party and after lighting the candle, we all sang happy Birthday to Him.
What an awesome tradition to celebrate our Savior.
